What can your date of birth tell you about your purpose in life? According to numerology, quite a bit. Having a life-long love of numbers (even a degree in mathematics), this esoteric method has always fascinated me. The good news is that you don't have to be a number whiz to do numerology. Pretty much, if you can add, you can come up with the data. Interpretation is another matter, but then again, that's what the art of something is all about.
In the system of numerology that I use, the birthdate gives an indication of what a person's life purpose is. That is, what is the primary lesson to be learned by this lifetime? I'll use an example to show how it works. Say a person was born on October 25, 1973. The first thing to do is to add up the digits of each component of the birthdate: The month, the day, and the year. October is the 10th month, so it is a 10. However, each component needs to be reduced to a single digit by adding the component digits together, unless it adds up to 11 or 22 (technicalities, don't worry about it now).
Here are the steps:
- October = 10 (a 1 and a 0)
- 1 + 0 = 1
- so, 1 is the first component of the final result.
For the day:
- 25 is a 2 and a 5
- 2 + 5 = 7
- 7 is the second component of the final result.
The year:
- 1973 is a 1, a 9, a 7, and a 3
- 1 + 9 + 7 + 3 = 20 (not yet a single digit, so keep going)
- 2 + 0 = 2
- 2 is the third component of the final result.
Add the components together and reduce as before:
- 1 (month) + 7 (day) + 2 (year) = 10
- 1 + 0 = 1
- So, the life path of someone born on October 25, 1973 is a 1.
Yeah, so? Well, each of the numbers (1 through 9, as well as 11 and 22) signify different lessons to be learned, as follows:
- 1, independence
- 2, cooperation, relationship
- 3, expression, joy of living
- 4, limitation
- 5, freedom
- 6, responsibility, love
- 7, introspection, spirituality
- 8, material satisfaction
- 9, humanitarianism
- 11, illumination, leadership
- 22, actualization, master builder
That's just the basic idea. The ins and outs are more complicated and each number deserves a good bit of space for its own entry. Oh, and there's another wrinkle. If the final result adds up to a 19, 13, 14, or 16, that's significant. It indicates a karmic debt that will need to be paid in this life in order for the person to advance. The nature of the debt is a strong manifestation of the negative expression in the number that it would be reduced to (19 reduced to 1; 13 to 4; 14 to 5; and 16 to 7).
The person's name at birth gives a great deal of information about their talents and personality, but that's a topic for another time. For now, feel free to add up your birthday and see what you chose to take on this time around.
By the way, I do numerological analyses (and Tarot readings, as well as other services) as part of my professional practice visit here for details.
